Do you make crafts? Do you like to look at crafts? Would you like to get (or give) advice about crafts? All crafts are welcome. Share photos, stories about projects in progress, and connect with other crafty folks.

You are welcome to make your own posts, and this community will also do a monthly call for people to share what they are working on, or what they've seen which may be inspiring them. Images of projects old or new, completed or in progress are welcome, as are questions, tutorials and advice.

Just a few rules:

1. Be polite
2. If you are sharing images, please resize them so that they are no wider than 700 pixels.
3. If you are sharing multiple images, please add a cut tag after the first one.
4. If your post needs a tag that's not available, please use the "tag needed" tag.

If you have any questions, ask them here!

The wire wrapped stone was a fairly good size so I decided to go bolder with the gold in the necklace so it would balance it out.

Hiii, i just wanted to show off how i hung up these feathers on my window!! They're turkey feathers that have naturally fallen off of my grandpa's domestic turkeys. Within the wrap knot on each feather is a short bamboo stick to kind of stabilize it and each one also has spiral half-knots. (there wasn't a macrame tag so i just put tag needed)

I called this my stock market set 😉

For the buffalo, a mix of metal, glass and metallicized plastic. Went with the star that was part of its carving, but also red and roses because Ferdinand was a favorite story as a little kid.

Funnily enough, the red beads show up so strongly in the photo but in life they're barely noticeable alongside the brown!

I decided to bring my electric spinning wheel home after keeping it at my partner's house, in an effort to stop myself from refreshing the same four websites all the time. It has worked out great and I am making a dent in my stash! It's a very small wheel, an EEW Nano, so I put it on my lap desk on an old pillowcase to catch fibre fuzz, and also because I can fold the pillow case around it and put it aside easily.

I finished three small batches of yarn, pictures under the cut:

Last month we discussed shows about crafts, but so many people have learned them from another person directly. Is that how you learned any of your crafts? And have you ever taught someone else how to do a craft?

It's 3 months out from the Canberra Spinners and Weavers annual exhibition and sale and I'm focusing on making stock to sell. I thought I'd include some of my design thoughts and process as I do, not to show off or promote stuff to sell, but to show that I'm just doing dumb stuff until it works. Anyone can do what I do, and more importantly everyone should be out there doing dumb stuff with their hands and their brains. The world is now not only on fire, but filled with creations that can make things but they cannot make at. Because art requires intention, and that's something Al doesn't have (yet). So use your hands and your brains and make things our techno overlords cent replicate.

**Cross posted from my journal, some weaving and knitting patter.**

So it's been over a month since I posted any thing crafty. I've certainly been crafting, I just haven't had any big finishes. I often think of my crafting approach as "kicking the can down the road." Lots of little steps, sometimes without significant progress.
So here's the cans I've been kicking. )

I just snagged the Humble Bundle quilting and embroidery bundle, 17 books on quilting (mostly with precuts), crazy quilting, sashiko and embroidery. I bought it because I wanted Purr-fect Patchwork, which is worth more than the whole bundle itself, but I'm excited to check out most of the titles.

The bundle is about $US20 (I see it in my own currency) and is available for the next 17 days.

Humble have also just released a knitting bundle, $US20 for 17 knitting books available for the next 10 days.

My partner and I don't really do Christmas because of our combined childhood and family trauma. But I suspected she'd gotten me a little gift and I was struggling to think of something to gift her in return. Then the December check in here prompted the idea to make her something.

Partner had mentioned that she wanted to do some cross stitching over the holidays, and I've always wanted to make a cross stitch project bag. So that's what I did!

This month's post will be serving double duty as a community promo. I also run the [community profile] threeforthememories event, whose 2025 session will be open for posts on January 3, 2026 and will run for 3 weeks until January 24. Participant posts consist of 3 photos (only) you've taken of anything from 2025 that you find meaningful in some way or which represent how you experienced the year. These could be your crafting activities, or anything else you find relevant.

Questions? Visit the announcement post at [community profile] threeforthememories

This month's question involves the holidays. Do you normally do crafting over this period? Is it related to any holidays? Do you do craft gifting? And if so, what do you plan to gift this year?

Although a number of necklaces I make have themes, some are inspired by types of fandoms or specific ones.

Although I have made other steampunk pieces with more direct allusions to machinery, I wanted to go more elegant with this one. The Steampunk heart above was a wide pendant though, so I used wide beads in red for a chunky look. Then I added in various types of metal beads -- some small alternating color heart ones in the extension, and wide silver and brass ones to echo the pendant metals.

I used to despise Christmas. Just utterly detest it. My Family of Origin are dysfunctional, self-interested assholes with no insight into how awful they are. But every Christmas my mother insisted we LARP as a caring family unit because Family is Christmas or something. The hyprocrisy was the worst part though. We barely spoke to each other but on Christmas we had to spend the whole day Being Pleasant and pretending Everything is Fine.

I've slowly gotten better with Christmas after I started ignoring my family for Christmas, and then extending that to every other holiday, and then every other day. So I'm now at a place where I can consider Christmas with something other than nauseating dread.

Which is a long and convoluted way to introduce the fact that I've been embroidering a Christmas stocking.

These two are ones I made last year. During a store closing I'd picked up a bunch of slides at a discounted rate but I don't tend to make bracelets which work particularly well with them. Many had been sitting around for some time, so I decided to use them as pendants when possible.

Hi all!

October will be here in 2 DAYS! Since 2008, October for me has been National Craft Making Month, or NaCraMaMo for short. NaCraMaMo started as a community on LJ, and I started a new [community profile] nacramamo community on DreamWidth when I moved here in 2017.

In short, during National Craft Making Month in October, you work on a craft every day for a month and post pictures of your work daily in [community profile] nacramamo. [community profile] nacramamo is very free-form; you can work on the same project every day or work on different projects every day. Crafting is also very loosely defined; it's basically anything that you do with your hands that results in a tangible object. For example, I count baking as crafting, but I don't count making dinner as crafting (but you might!)

A lot of people use [community profile] nacramamo as a jumpstart for Halloween projects and Winter holiday gift making.

I'd love to have you join me, giving it your best shot.

The wire tree over the shell pendant was a great look, in part because it cut down the iridescence of the backing. This post is to prompt anyone who has been doing crafting lately to share about their projects. Plus there's a general question for everyone to chime in on.

This month I wanted to ask about crafting costs. A lot of us have experienced increased costs for all sorts of things, crafting material included.

How have you all dealt with this? Have you changed the kind of items you get, do exchanges with other crafters, stockpile stuff from clearances or store closures? Do tell!

Hello! I'm new here. I followed a link from Ysabetwordsmith's blog.

I don't usually post here. I usually live at Blogspot or Substack. And I don't usually post photos.

I do, however, knit, and if I took digital photos to ost, they'd be of knitted work.

Meanwhile it's fun to see what others are makng.

That was a very drawn out project I spun mostly on my EEW Nano wheel over the course of a couple of months. The base is a merino colourway by Woolfiend, plyed with Cobuger Fuchsschaf (top right), black merino (bottom right), grey Corriedale (bottom left) and grey Gotland fibre - it turned out so nice, I am super pleased. It's a new month and time for a check in about crafts you may have been creating or planning.

I was browsing through the photos I've uploaded to dreamwidth to see which cross stitch pieces I've posted to my journals and which I haven't yet, and came across a photo of my favourite sweater, so I thought I'd share it here. I've made this design 5 times over the years, twice for my sister with a sage green background, and three times for myself, this one, a lighter blue, and a rust colour.

The design isn't actually knitted in, because I'm not good at that, it's stitched on afterwards using the Swiss darning technique, which follows the knitting stitches so it just LOOKS knitted. I've made quite a few picture sweaters using this technique. I like the extra thickness it gives on the front.

This is the last set of designs I completed. finished a week or so ago. They're smaller than the seashells, only about 11 by 8cm, and again stitched on 18 count with one strand of thread. this time I used rustico aida, which I love stitching on.

Again, putting the pics behind a cut because of size.

Cover of book showing wine red damask, a title plate with gold outline, and gold splatter.
Finally done with my biggest bookbinding project yet! One of my all-time favorite fics, Head In The Lion's Mouth by renwhit

I'm really happy with how this came out. I knew I wanted wine and gold as the color scheme. The wine colored damask was a placemat that I harvested and scraped away a lot of deteriorated batting/filling from the inside. The gold is metallic ink that I mixed 1:1 Brass and Bronze, which ended up with a very nice antique gold look. The Brass on its own looks too yellow, especially on page edges.

The typesetting. I tried out being more creative this time 'round. I put in fancy first letters of each chapter, and effect I like a lot. There are sections of the fic that switch to being right-aligned, so I had to add all of that by hand.

The binding! Despite the thickness of the book, I went with my normal method (Sea Lemon's stitch) rather than attempting a curved spine. Unfortunately, somehow when I set the glue on the spine to dry, the text block was weirdly angled and dried uneven. Which meant I spent twice as long (more actually, but I'll get to that) sanding down the edges to be even.

For doing the edges, I tried out applying the metallic ink with a brush (bad idea #1) and sealing it in with beeswax (bad idea #2). It looked good in the press, but when I cracked the pages, it became an uneven ugly mess. That meant...more sanding! Another half hour of sanding later, I did my normal technique of applying the ink with a piece of cloth (so it's drier than with a brush) and leaving it at that.

The title plate. Originally, I wanted to try using an iron-on sheet, but I couldn't get it to peel. Instead, I used normal paper with a single layer of varnish to give it a hint of water resistance and glued it on.

The splatter really added the verve and spunk the book needed. While Danny has wine red blood that splatters on a gold-toed shoe, this book cover inverts it! The wine red is a little more purple than the photos capture.

I finished these a few weeks back but only just got around to taking photographs a few days ago. Nevertheless, as promised, here are pics of the 6 seashell designs I stitched. I used 18 count antique white aida for these, and a single strand of thread, to make the designs small enough for use on greetings cards. Size wise, they're approximately 13.5 by 10 cm. The square one is obviously smaller. Putting both pics behind a cut for size reasons.

Recently I made a couple of new earrings based on the character Takeuchi from the series Mars Red. I've made more earrings featuring this character but these are the newer ones.

A pair of earrings suspended on clear plastic in front of a wall. The earrings are of a black logo with a grinning character that wears an eyepatch. Text around the head reads 'takeuchi pharma'. A bow dangled from it from a chain, a drop-shaped pearl at the bottom. The other earring is just a bow on a chain.   Stud earrings of a little chibi anime head of a character with an eyepatch, smiling
I only made one of the leftmost earrings cus it's a pain working with clear shrinky-dink plastic lol (I also only had one red drop bead but that's a different problem)
