Cross Stitch and Patterns
Good evening! This seems like a fun little community so I figure I'd contribute a bit. I sometimes make my own cross stitch patterns in MS paint and this was one of them.

Does anybody else try and make their own patterns, be it cross stitch or any other medium?

Yes ...

I make my own patterns for friendship bracelet sometimes (quite easy for me, but rarely needed because I favor abstract patterns and there are already so many of these out there), and crochet (not easy for me because I can't just draw it and be done with the patterning, I need to test and take notes and that totally takes me out of my usual crafting flow. Which is super sad because I long for patterns that just don't exist...)

Given that you move your threads around each time you make a knot, you need to plan ahead to make sure every color is accessible where you need it =)
Crochet is super cool, I like how fast you can make cute little things, and how easy it is to move and work on anywhere!

I've made a few cross stitch patterns, but mostly what I like to do is mash up existing patterns with amusing (to me, anyway) words or sayings. For example, I took a nice vineyard & grapes & wine pattern and added "To Do: [ ] Drink [ ] Know Things" with little checkboxes checked off. :)
